Chapter 11

Bundling up for the short trek, I play through various movie scenarios inside my head. When I open the door of the station, will Erick sense my arrival and step out of his office? Will he be happy to see me, or will he banish me from the premises?

Maybe I should’ve taken the time to put on a sexy outfit or a seductive shade of lipstick?

All the handy little gimmicks that work so well on the silver screen seem like empty, hollow gestures. The truth is, my heart is broken and I owe Sheriff Harper a massive apology. No plunging neckline or luscious berry lip tint is going to solve this problem.

Inside the bustling station, two deputies are fielding calls and making notes in the bullpen, while Furious Monkeys has had to put her phone down to handle the growing line of real, live humans queuing up in front of her desk, to file complaints about the canceled snocross or offering useless tips in an attempt to score a juicy tidbit to share with their coffee klatch. She fires me a put-upon side eye and nods her head sharply. Clearly, she hasn’t heard that Erick and I are on a break.

Taking any opportunity given, I push through the crooked swinging gate and enter the bullpen.

Just when I think I’ll make it safely across the room, Deputy Paulsen launches out of Erick’s office with a red face and veritable steam coming out of her ears. “What are you doing here, Moon?”

When in doubt, lie it out. “I had some information for Deputy Johnson.” Deputy Johnson and I are loosely acquainted, and he mostly knows me as the sheriff’s girlfriend, so he fidgets nervously behind his desk as his eyes dart back and forth between Deputy Paulsen and myself. A tentative smile finally breaks his stern expression. “Give me one second to finish this gentleman’s statement, Miss Moon.”

Nodding pleasantly, I flash a grin and offer a triumphant head nod in Paulsen’s direction. “Looks like everything will be handled in a moment. Don’t let me keep you from your investigation.”

She growls openly and storms through the front of the station.

Johnson pulls the report out of his typewriter, grabs a pen, and hands it to the concerned citizen. “Just sign your name at the bottom, and you’re free to go. Thank you for coming in today.” He looks up and gestures his thumb toward the interrogation rooms. “Sheriff Harper is questioning a suspect right now. Did you want to wait in his office?”

Not bad for a newbie. For a minute there, I thought Johnson actually believed my story. But clearly he saw through my ruse and kindly chose to support my alibi. “Actually, that sounds great. Thanks for covering for me.”

He rolls his eyes ever so slightly and winks.

Walking toward Erick’s office, I’m overcome with curiosity about whom he’s questioning. A quick glance over my shoulder reveals Deputy Johnson deep in conversation with the concerned citizen. Before he can look up, I slip into the observation room between Interrogation Rooms One and Two.
